The reporting on the Academic Bill of Rights by the press is typically appalling and just plain typical of a profession trained by journalism schools staffed by editors of The Nation, Counterpunch.org and other leftist organs. (The curious can find several specimens profiled in The Professors.) Still a new column by Donald R. Eastman III, the president of Eckerd College, a Presbyterian insitution, takes one of the cakes. Anyone who bothers to read the Academic Bill of Rights, let alone anything the author has written about it, would know that it is designed to remove politics from the academic curriculum into which it has been inserted by the radicals who oppose the bill. The very first tenet of the Academic Bill of Rights, as I have been forced to repeat to the hard of reading innumerable times forbids the hiring or firing of faculty for political reasons. Yet here is yet another article, this time by the aforesaid President writing in the St. Petersburg Times called "Leave Politics Out of Faculty Hiring Choices" asserting that black is white and up is down and I am the one attempting to insert the politics and the tenured politicians who have blacklisted conservatives for the last 25 years are academic innocents who have not. Eckerd president's article concludes with the tired arrogant and invincibly stupid claim that faculties have more leftists because leftists are capable critical thought -- no they're not -- and of course conservatives aren't. In fact that last thing that anyone on the left is capable of -- or so it appears from the many articles like this they have published -- is critical thought.
